Information on buying a property in Scotland:  Which IFA should I use?

Choosing an IFA or bank lender can be a nightmare.  Who do you trust? What is a reasonable charge? Am I getting the best produce or the best commission producing product?

These are all genuine fears which some people have.  Ask your friends and family if they have used an IFA that they've found helpful and offered them sound advice with reasonable fees.  I would always recommend that you research your needs first and this is much easier than you think.  A quality financial comparison supplier such as moneysupermarket.com will research thousands of products for you and provide you with appropriate feedback from some of the top UK finance houses.

Lending money, mortgages and insurance is a very competitive market place and new products are introduced on a daily basis.  Use our mortgage comparison table to take to your bank or IFA and see how they compete with the one's we've provided to you. Haggle on fees - even with the banks, there is usually flexibility in the setup charges/commissions and it's only a matter of asking that could save you hundreds of pounds.

My girlfriend used to be immensely embarrassed at my haggling - but at the same time, she would gladly accept the cash bonus that resulted in getting a better deal.  Keep your haggling relevant and light hearted but at the same time, if you've done your homework, give them no choice but to compromise on some part of their fees - You'll feel much better for it.

If you can't get them to budge on this - just say to them "Ok, I like the product but I do believe your charges are excessive here - let me do some further research and I'll get back to you today/this week/ next week" - Be prepared to walk out on a good note - you are just protecting your funds by trying to get the best deal.  It may well be that the charges are the lowest they can provide and the best deal you can get - in that case you accept it and get moving as quickly as possible.  All I'm saying is, shop around for the best mortgage, insurance and finance deals until you get the right product for you.
